The Settlers Museum was founded in 1987 by Charles Phillippi to honor and preserve the heritage of this area. Under Mr. Phillippi's stewardship, the Farmhouse was carefully restored to its 1890s appearance, a one room school house added, and 67 of the farm's original acres were acquired. Mr. Phillippi passed in 2005, but his legacy of education and passion for history remains alive and thriving at the museum he began almost 20 years ago.
The museum has continued to support Mr. Phillippi's founding vision of hands-on educational activities, and passion for historic discovery. We are very proud of our friendly, helpful volunteer support staff and our knowledgeable Historic Interpreters.
Our PurposeThe museum exists to tell the story of the people who settled the mountainous southwest corner of Virginia and to help explain how the area's unique culture developed. The Migration Story of the people who came to these mountains in the mid-1700s is told through a series of displays in the Visitors Center. This is a tale of two groups, the Scotch-Irish and the Germans, who carved their farms from the wilderness and formed the mountain culture. The restored 1894 Lindamood School is a prime example of the self-sufficient culture that created its own schools generations before the state claimed this responsibility. You will enjoy seeing the school and learning about educational development in the area. The 1890s Farm, with its restored farmhouse and nine outbuildings has the look and feel of an average farm in this area around 100 years ago. All these buildings have been preserved so none are reconstructed. You are sure to enjoy visiting this slice of life from the past.
