School Tours PDF Print E-mail

B ring your class for an exciting adventure into the past.  At the Settlers Museum of Southwest Virginia, we offer a variety of hands on activities to enable our guests to experience life as it truly was in 18th and 19th century Virginia.

Among our Volunteer Interpreters, we have several retired schoolteachers who understand the importance and significance of the Virginia SOL's.

The School Group tour takes most of the day. The morning is usually spent in the restored one room Lindamood school learning about the history of education in this area, and what life was like for the children attending a one room school.

After the morning spent in the school house, lunch can be taken on the school grounds as it would have been in 1894, or in our clean, modern picnic shelter.

The afternoon activities include a guided tour of the
restored 1890s farm with lots of hands-on activities. Your class will enjoy helping the farm with some common chores. Some of these chores include fetching water from the well, stacking firewood, washing clothes on a washboard, gathering eggs, mending and sewing, and harvesting crops in their season.

We will cover the appropriate SOLs using lessons, games, and hands-on activities.

Fees for school groups are $3.00 per child.
Teachers, chaperones, and drivers receive free admission.
