VOLUNTEERING PDF Print E-mail

H ere at the Settlers Museum, we feel that preservation of our heritage is of the utmost importance. It's a pretty big mission, and the truth is, we couldn't accomplish it without the help of our volunteers.

If you've never volunteered, but you're interested in getting involved, we would love to have you. Who knows? Volunteering could lead you down a new and exciting path!

Opportunities

There are many opportunities for you to give something back to your local community by volunteering at the Settlers Museum. While some of these involve sweat, blisters, bug bites pounding nails and property maintenance, there are plenty of other less demanding opportunities available. Chances are, if you've got a skill or interest, we will probably be able to match it with a need.

There are three basic categories of volunteer positions:

INTERPRETIVE:
This is your opportunity to be a historical interpreter educating the public about the history of the migration story, agriculture and rural life. You will receive written materials and on-going training. Period clothing is desired, not required. We have openings at the following: 1890s Farm, 1894 Schoolhouse

MAINTENANCE: Life on an 1890s Farm was a lot of hard work. We need
volunteers with skills in mending and repairing of our antique farm implements, grass mowing, weeding, painting, and preparing for animals. Building and restoration projects are held year-round; other outdoor work projects include general maintenance and repairs, planting crops, and set-up/clean-up help for museum events.

VISITOR SERVICES: We need friendly people to
greet guests at the museum; assist with special events; floral garden maintenance; office duties; various duties related to the care and maintenance of artifacts; equipment and buildings; and orienting the general visitor and school groups to the Settlers Museum.

We train our volunteers as they come, so you need not wait to jump in and get started!

Neither a degree in history nor a farm background is needed to volunteer. All that is required is an open mind, and a willingness to learn.

The majority
of on-going volunteer positions with the Settlers Museum are available from April 1st through the end of November. Other educational programs, and "behind-the-scenes" positions are available year round. There are a wide variety of experiences and time commitments, and the involvement of families is encouraged.

We also offer many one-time opportunities for individuals or groups. For example, volunteering for any of our upcoming events would be a perfect opportunity to try us out for a day.

Volunteers have been an integral part of the Settlers Museum since the beginning in 1987. The special talents and commitment of volunteers contribute to the museum's success. In return, the Settlers Museum strives to give the volunteer a stimulating, exciting experience. If you are interested, please contact us.
