This building evolved through at least four states. It started as a 1 1/2 story log cabin, had a kitchen added to the rear, then a frame addition on the west end with a two-room second floor, next the kitchen was replaced with a dining room and a new kitchen. Last was the two-story front porch with an upstairs entrance.
The farm originally encompassed 275 acres in 1890s. On the farm, typical of the time, the people grew various crops including corn, wheat and barley along with a variety of vegetables and a large fruit orchard. Hogs and chickens, supplemented by wild game were the sources of meat. Due to lack of refrigeration, pork was salt cured and left hung up in the meat house for storage. The family also had a milking cow, at least one team of horses or mules for work and travel as well as other animals at various times including goats and sheep.
